Overall, a very exciting debut and, although theres nothing to confirm this, the epilogue definitely suggests a sequel is coming. the side characters also provide amazing support and are very likeable, so much so that i wanted more of them and wished this has been written with more than two POVs. I also liked that the ahn and altan were able to stand well on their own and had their own interesting journeys, but i thought they especially lit up the page when they were together. this isnt as graphic or severe as ‘the poppy war,’ but there are a lot of elements in this that kept reminding me of that. ![]() ive read books in the genre before, but i had no idea that chinese fantasy stories inspired by chinese mythology, medicine, and martial arts had a name. I really appreciate how this introduced me to xianxia. but fans of reliable fantasy tropes should enjoy this. ![]() ![]() If, however, we approach marriage for the giving, we put into action the kind of oneness that Paul speaks about in Ephesians 5, loving each other as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her. If marriage is about the getting, it’s about usury, and there’s no use for holy vows at all. Lewis rightly says that we cannot predict or promise a feeling any more than promising never to have a headache. We should ask, is marriage for the getting or the giving? If it’s the former, then we always lose. It’s this selfishness, and not the selfless act of giving ourselves to one another, that forms a basis for Satan to do his work. ![]() And if this love fades away, many people believe divorce is permitted. To Screwtape’s delight, the idea of “falling in love” is now a quid pro quo to marriage. God demands “either complete abstinence or unmitigated monogamy,” Screwtape assesses in our August 8 reading. When we isolate sex outside of the marriage union, we are attempting pleasure only in part, and not as a whole blessing of God. God designed a man and a woman to be a “single organism,” like a violin and bow are one instrument, or a lock and key are one mechanism, Lewis says. ![]() Why is sexual intercourse outside of marriage sinful? I have a hard time believing that this is truly a memoir. Gilli is larger than life and so much fun to read about. Most importantly, this book cracked me up. It was so interesting reading about the issues that came up in their relationship- the jealousy, the division of time and affection, and the sexual dynamics. I loved the interplay between Dick (my fave!), Shane (sexy daddy), and Gilli. and I loved every second of it! I am not one for menage relationships usually, but in this setting, I didn't mind it at all. What we do see is Gilli being his irrational, emotional, bratty self. There is certainly mention of sex (in every chapter) but we don't get the play by play. Īlso, most of the sex here is off page (boo! hiss!). For more on domestic discipline, see here.
